Description

Doris Dutch (1926-2016)

This vigorously glazed platterwith good provenance is a studio potter’s work from the 1980s. Doris Dutch exhibited at the New Vision Gallery in Auckland, a gallery that celebrated the studio craft arts , focusinmg on print, ceramics and textiles. In line with the philosophy of the studio ceramics movement, her works balance the natural properties of clay and glaze with the constraints required by the forms of the domestic object. This work allows its blue glaze full play.

The donor has provied this fuller description:

“Curved platter but flat enough to use as a wall plaque Has a red brown glaze with some black markings on the back and this same glaze has been used as an underglaze on the top surface. This has then been over glazed on the top with a glossy blue glaze allowing the underglaze to show through in places to create the decorative pattern. The blue glaze has minute crazing on close inspection. The blue glaze appears to change in intensity according to the light. It has the incised mark of Doris Dutch on the side of the base although hard to make out as glaze has dribbled into it. It comes with the original paper label from Cat Gallery in Ponsonby Auckland, probably in the 1980s, and says, “Your Pot was made by Doris Dutch”.
