Description

John Husband was a colourful  artist and commentator on Southland and Otago life for decades; he also took part in public life, working until 2011 as a Director at the Anderson Park Art Gallery. This extract from an interview  in 2017 conveys his spirit: “Husband’s introduction to The Southland Times came courtesy of a biro.Whitcombe and Tombs, later to become Whitcoulls, had decided to become a patron of the arts, at least when the art highlighted the creative potential of a biro. Not unimpressed, veteran journalist  F. W. G. (Fred)  Miller, had hit him up outside the Post Office. You do the drawing, he said, and I’ll write a story about it.” Country Store, Beaumont, 1969  is a record of a Beaumont that no longer exists. https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/arts/99659430/still-standing-still-southland
